Take a walk down Magellan's Memory Lane with these stories and photos from events we've participated in, opportunities we've had, people we have had the pleasure to meet.

SALUTE TO OUR TROOPS

Puttin’ on the ritz at Navy Pier

Magellan has been a longtime supporter of and the remarkable work they do to serve those who serve all of us. Our own Matthew Bell and his wife Monica enjoyed a well-deserved night on the town at the Salute Gala on Navy Pier on September 10, 2023, for which Magellan was a sponsor. Matt served in the Army Reserves for 9 years, has been Magellan's IT Manager for 5 years, and has been an active USO Illinois Board member for three years. We’re proud of our team.

TENNIS ACROSS THE POND

BJK Cup 2022 in Scotland

Magellan friends from both sides of the Atlantic gathered in Glasgow for a few fantastic days of camaraderie and world-class women's tennis -- including time with the woman of the hour herself-- at the Billie Jean King Cup. Magellan has long fostered a commitment to initiatives (not just athletic!) promoting gender equality, and there has been no fiercer advocate than Billie Jean. We’re proud of this connection, and to be able to share the experience with dear colleagues and friends.

BEAR DOWN

Magellan's Lunch & Learn

Abby Bruggeman and Becky Reiter channeled their inner Ditka during a company outing to Hallas Hall in November 2022. Staff members enjoyed a buffet lunch in a viewing suite overlooking the practice field. After watching the team work their drills, play-by-play announcer and voice of the Chicago Bears Jeff Joniak held a Q&A for diehard fans. Lynn Tanis, Bob Arthur and Amy Ford each flexed a little sporty knowledge to win Bears gnomes. A great day!

Magellan Sponsored Chicago Sky Black History Contest

With Excerpts from sky.wnba.com

In honor of Black History Month the Chicago Sky hosted a creative expression contest encouraging students in Illinois to positively reflect on their favorite African American leader/icon and how this person inspires or inspired them to live out their dreams.

The contest, made possible in part by Sam’s Club, DuSable African American History Museum and Magellan Corporation, presented an opportunity for all K-12 students to show their understanding of the importance of acceptance and human rights by sharing their feelings, opinions, experiences and ideas in a creative style.

Winners received a $500 gift card, provided by Sam’s Club and the Sky Cares Foundation to be used towards school supplies, a tour for their entire class at DuSable African American History Museum guided by Tamera Young and Sky Guy and a Chicago Sky game experience at Allstate Arena in 2016.

It was our pleasure to be part of an initiative that encouraged young people to reflect upon and write about the people of color who have provided inspiration, leadership, change.

CHICAGO SKY UNVEILS NEW UNIFORMS

An Article from redeyechicago.com

The WNBA is celebrating its 20th season with new uniform colors for 10 of its 12 teams including the Chicago Sky.

The league said Monday the uniforms will replace the traditional white jerseys at home and color jerseys on the road. San Antonio and Los Angeles will remain the same since both already feature all-color uniform designs.

"Of course, it's significant to us," new WNBA President Lisa Borders said. "I am delighted we have picked up on these beautiful colors that add depth and context and contour to our teams."

The Sky's new home jersey is essentially the same as last season's road uniform, which features primarily Sky blue with a yellow accent extending from the shoulders to the upper back. The new road uniforms flips this look with yellow as the primary color and blue as the accent.

The WNBA becomes one of the first American pro leagues to have no white jerseys. The teams won't have specific home and away uniforms.

Field of Greens Golf Outing

A Benefit for White Sox Charities

On June 17, 2017, Chicago White Sox Charities hosted the Field of Greens golf outing at Harborside International Golf Course in Chicago. Magellan Corporation employees and guests golfed alongside players and alum including Paul Konerko, Carlton Fisk, Bo Jackson and Harold Baines.

Some of the notables who attended the event, in addition to above, were Sox alumni Bo Jackson and Ron Kittle; broadcasters Ed Farmer, Hawk Harrelson, Darrin Jackson and Steve Stone; and Sox coaches Daryl Boston, Joe McEwing and Mark Parent. The event included a raffle, auction, a great day of duffing and food and drink. Proceeds benefited pediatric cancer treatment and research programs at Comer Children's Hospital and Lurie Children's Hospital.

Magellan Corporation was delighted to participate both as players and, most meaningfully, sponsors. We have been proud supporters of White Sox Charities, as well as ticket holders and sponsors of the Sox. Click here to view  video.

THE BIGGEST CHICAGO SPORTS SPONSOR YOU DON'T KNOW

From Crain's Chicago Business, Danny Ecker

If you've seen Derrick Rose, Tom Thibodeau or any othermember of the Chicago Bulls organization on TV speaking to the media over the past three years, you're likely familiar with the name Magellan.

It's in the white "three sails" logo dotting the black backdrop for nearly every Bulls news conference, screaming for attention while you're hanging on every spoken word.

But you probably don't know what Magellan is, what it does where it's based — and for Magellan, that's just fine.

"We're not trolling for new customers," Magellan President Bob Arthur said.

A quick rundown: Deerfield-based Magellan Corporation is a global distributor of specialty steel products and a subsidiary of cargo ship management conglomerate Seatrade Transport International Inc.

The company operates more than 40 oceangoing boats that ship industrial steel products used in factories and on machinery but not typically in the consumer space. To continue reading, click here.

He was pickin', we were grinnin' -- at the Blue Jean Gala

Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers

Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers played to a crowd of hundreds of appreciative guests of the Old Town School of Music's 2014 Blue Jean Gala.

The Steep Canyon Rangers is an American bluegrass band based in North Carolina. While they formed in 2000, it was the addition in 2009 of well-known comedian but accomplished banjo player Steve Martin that catapulted them to wider recognition. In 2013, their solo album Nobody Knows You won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. The previous year, their 2012 collaboration with Steve Martin, Rare Bird Alert, was nominated for the same award.

As sponsor of the event, Magellan Corporation was able to treat guests to a meet-and-greet with Steve Martin and band. As always, the Blue Jean Gala began with a culinary crawl up Lincoln Avenue, and ended with a great musical performance. All proceeds from the always-anticipated annual event go toward the vast array of musical programming and educational opportunities provided by the Old Town School of Folk Music.
