About Stainless Steel

Stainless steels are widely used in a variety of industries, including food processing and pharmaceuticals, automotive, textiles, chemicals, aircraft, and oil and gas. It is used for those applications that require a low magnetic permeability, such as measuring instruments that send electronic impulses.

Duplex stainless steels combines the characteristics of the ferretic and austenitic family of alloys, offering benefits of increased strength, corrosion resistance, and affordable pricing. Duplex stainless is used in offshore and near-shore operations in the oil and gas sector in water treatment, desalination, industrial operations and drilling. It is used for naval components and parts, pulp and paper production, hot water and brewing tanks, chemical and liquid processing, pollution control equipment and in the construction industry.

Standard grades of austenitic, precipitation hardened, and martensitic stainless steel round bars are stocked in Chicago in a broad range of sizes available for immediate delivery.

Magellan’s Houston facilities stock 316, 17-4 annealed, 17-4 HH1150, and 2205.

Common Applications

An “18-8” chromium-nickel stainless steel, Grade 303 is modified by the addition of selenium or sulfur, as well as phosphorus, which improves non-seizing properties and machinability. It is ideal for parts that will need to be heavily machined, including gears, electrical components, aircraft fittings, bushings, nuts, screws and bolts.

A highly heat-resistant grade, and exceptional for its high tensile strength, 304 stainless steels are used in auto molding and trim, wheel covers, hose clamps, exhaust manifolds, kitchen equipment, storage tanks, pressure vessels, piping, electrical enclosures.

Stainless 316 is a molybdenum alloyed austenitic steel, and is the most highly demanded chemical process grade. It can withstand caustic solutions and corrosive applications such as vapor degreasing or many other parts cleaning processes. It is ideal for medical and pharmaceutical applications.

Grade 17-4 is used for components which require high hardness and corrosion resistance at temperatures of up to 600° F (316° C). It is used in aircraft components, and in the chemical and petroleum industries.

Duplex 2205 is ideally suited for high-pressure and highly corrosive environments, accounting for its wide use in the oil and gas market.

A super duplex stainless steel, grade 2507 has 25% chromium, 4% molybdenum, and 7% nickel, making it the choice for applications demanding exceptional corrosion resistance and strength, such as chemical processes, petrochemical, and seawater equipment.
